  • Vitamin K (fat-soluble vitamins) the human body needs for complete synthesis of certain proteins that are required for blood coagulation and also certain proteins that the body uses to control binding of calcium in bone and other tissues.
  • The International Meeting on Counter-Terrorism was held at Bali, Indonesia on August 10, 2016. The theme of the multilateral meeting is “Countering Cross-Border movement of Terrorism”.
  • A North Korean submarine has test-launched a KN-11 ballistic missile in the East China Sea.

  • The 2016 BRICS Youth Summit was held in Guwahati, India from July 1-3, 2016 with the theme ‘Youth as bridge for Intra-BRICS Exchanges’. The subjects to be covered under the summit are skill development and entrepreneurship, social inclusion, youth volunteerism and youth participation in governance.

  • Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has successfully launched its satellite SCATSAT-1 for ocean and weather-related studies from Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota. The satellite Carrying the 377 kg SCATSAT-1 and seven other satellites.
  • The 2016 Maritime India Summit (MIS) was organized at Bombay Convention and Exhibition Centre, Goregaon, Mumbai. It is a maiden flagship initiative of Union Ministry of Shipping that will provide a unique global platform for investors to explore potential business opportunities in the Indian Maritime Sector.
  • The eighth edition of India-Russia joint military exercise ‘INDRA-2016’ has begun in the Ussiriysk District in Vladivostok, Russia. The ‘INDRA’ series of annual bilateral exercises and is one of the major bilateral defence cooperation initiatives between India and Russia since 2003.

  • Statutory liquidity ratio (SLR) is the Indian government term for reserve requirement that the commercial banks in India require to maintain in the form of gold, government approved securities before providing credit to the customers. Statutory Liquidity Ratio is determined and maintained by Reserve Bank of India in order to control the expansion of bank credit. SLR is 20.75% (as per RBI official site) at present in India.
  • USSD (Unstructured Supplementary Service Data) is a Global System for Mobile (GSM) communication technology that is used to send text between a mobile phone and an application program in the network. Applications may include prepaid roaming or mobile chatting.
  • First meeting of Goods & Services Tax (GST) Council decided to exempt businesses with annual turnover below 20 lakh out of GST net. Businesses in North-eastern and hill states will be free of GST for annual turnover below Rs.10 lakh. 
    Base Year: The GST Council also agreed to settle 2015-16 as the base year for calculating the compensation.

  • Central Government banned cash transactions over 3 lakhs to curb black money. The Rs 3 lakh-limit is aimed to ensure that transactions are made using credit or debit cards, cheques or drafts which can be easily tracked.
